Nebulae in Rho Ophiuchus

Near Happy Jack, Arizona

This is an image of two bright nebulae in the constellation Ophiuchus, IC 4603 and IC 4604. IC4603 is a large diffuse nebula and is illuminated by a 7.9 magnitude star. The Rho Ophiuchi Nebula (IC4604) is illuminated by triple star Rho Ophiuchi and is approximately 540 light-years distant. It is one of the nearest star-forming regions to our Sun. The reddish areas in the image are primarily due to reflected light from the nearby star Antares, outside the field of view. Numerous young dim red stars dot the area.
