We walked a short distance south of our original position and began playing a recording. Almost instantly one responded with a call of their own. We moved toward the creek where the call was coming from, and one flew over our heads. They have lazy, slow wingbeats similar to a Short-eared owl. It circled overhead for several minutes before landing in some nearby trees. We quickly located it and were able to capture some nice photographs. It is rare that these birds will respond and come perch for photographs, so we considered ourselves very fortunate that this one was so cooperative. After several minutes, it flew to a nearby tree where it continued to call for some time.
