Forked Lake
On, Thursday, October 10, my friend and I traveled from Idabel to the Little River Wildlife Refuge along the Little River between Idabel and Broken Bow with the intent of finding salamanders.

Talimena Drive
We next drove north toward the Talimena Drive (State Highway1), that runs from the area of Talihina, Oklahoma toward Mena, Arkansas. If you have never taken the time to make this scenic drive through the Ouachita National Forest, it is certainly worth the trip. Besides the scenery shown in this photo, our intent on this trip was to try to locate a Rich Mountain Salamander.

variant as it seemed to lack the bronze coloring described on other variants.

Giant Walking Stick
While looking for salamanders, I also spotted a Giant Walking Stick insect. These are large wingless insects that can be 3 to 6 inches in length. They are wingless and slow moving, using the natural camouflage as protection from predators. This one was about 4 inches in length.
