I suppose it's an issue of interpretation really.
If you take a bearing from Garstang Town Hall, the castle is roughly SE of the town.
In terms of the canal which is the benchmark I use, the general cruising direction is to the south (i.e., we pass the castle after passing the southernmost moorings of Garstang), hence the description.
Hope it doesn't cause confusion.
