I was using a large aperture because I was shooting though the fencing. f5 was just about enough to throw it out of focus. And I was using AI servo with centre focus point.

Extremely well executed shot. Interesting choice to do it in aperture priority instead of shutter priority. Judging by the choice of f5, I'm guessing that you wanted a narrow DOF on the subject. Focus is excellent, and, in my opinion what makes this picture. Is so sharp that I can see the heat waves emanating from the roaring engine. Nicely done!
If you do not mind sharing, what focus mode were you using? (manual, AF-One Shot, AI Servo, Predictive AF)
