This rather handsome species is occasionally known as a "motorbike frog" because the male's hopeful courtship call sounds
(to some ears) a little like a motorbike. Growling grass frogs are the most aquatic frog species occurring in Tasmania, living in
swamps and freshwater lagoons where their colouration blends perfectly with the stems of floating vegetation. This is an
uncommon species threatened by Chytrid fungus. The use of frogs as bait by some anglers is a practice that could easily
introduce pathogens into previously uninfected areas.
