À l'insu de son mari, Bertha Benz — l'épouse de Benz — et leurs deux fils adolescents entreprirent en 1888 le premier long trajet à bord d'une version améliorée de la voiture, reliant Mannheim à Pforzheim, sa ville natale. Grâce à ce voyage aller-retour de 180 kilomètres, Bertha Benz démontra au monde entier la viabilité du véhicule motorisé.

Without her husband's knowledge, Bertha Benz—Benz's wife—and their two teenage sons undertook the first long-distance journey in 1888 aboard an improved version of the car, traveling from Mannheim to Pforzheim, her hometown.
