My family lived there for a long time in the big house surrounded by bushes (it's gone now), my Grandpa Stark was the mayor for some time and my uncle still farms ten minutes away. I love that place and still go back. I have some really fun memories as a kid growing up there and have been inside of the church & convent countless times while both were in active use.

Hi, my name is Victor Risling and I lived in Handel from 1957 to 1960. My father, Adam Risling, originally from Wilkie, ran the two UGG grain elevators there. I have great memories of driving from Handel to Leiptzig every Friday and taking piano lessons from Sister Vincenta at that georgeous old convent. I see you had a response from Bob lesmeister on your comment page. I remember him well from my days in Handel and then later in Edmonton many years ago. I am retired and live in San Diego, Ca. My in-laws lived in Leipzig for many years. John Bojarski worked as a road grader until he passed away. Agnes bojarski worked at the school in Leipzig until it closed down. That was their blue and white house in the second row of pictures,the first on the right. I think it still stands lonely and alone there today.There are good memories of that little town.

I arrived in Leipzig Sask. in August of 1952 as indentured Farm help. I worked for one year for Vincent and Jacob Sucham on their farm just west of the townsite, Then spent some time at the farm of John and Regina Bittner before moving to Edmonton AB. This being the 60th anniversity of my arrival in Leipzig I sall retur for a visit. James Menk

I just found this site. I am happy to see it my grandparents live in Leipzig for many years. Their house was about 30 steps from the blue and white house in the second row!! It has since burned down:(

As with any kind of illness, an initial prerequisite to achieving treatment for addiction demands sincere empathy. Even trained workers disqualify themselves if they have inate prejudice towards addiction and the alcoholic or addict. A study was done why an institutional program was not working. The program apparently included all the ingredients necessaqry to a successful operation. It was learned that it was the antipathy of the personnel to the patients that was at fault. Other studies have indicated that more important than medication, the place, kind of source of treatment, is the attitude, empathy and technique of those concerned with the addict/alcoholic that make the difference. Even some recovered addicts/alcoholics, who may present as unsympathetic towards alcoholism or addiction and even intolerant of using or drinking, are useless as care givers for those seeking treatment. I have worked in the "addictions field" for 29 years, and have had the priviledge of being twice now at the Leipzig Retreat. God, in His benevolent wisdom has provided three angelic caregivers to extend their love for others. I have met them, and it is indeed inspiring to know that those seeking help at Leipzig will receive warmth and understanding. They will get a golden opportunity to reaffirm their own dignity, in a safe, supportive and loving atmosphere. Ron Harris

Pat Rogal I lived in Handel for most of my childhood, just down the road from Leipzig.We were closely linked to the convent as the SSND Sisters also taught in Handel.I have many fond memories of these good Sisters. Several of my wife's Aunts from Bodo, Alberta attended this convent after their mother died so young. They were the Hauck girls. It's awesome to this building restored and being used in a special way to help many people including a breath of life for the community of Leipzig. May God continue to Bless this good work.

I just heard about this big change at the convent and am very happy to hear it is being put to good use. I grew up in Leipzig, lived there until 1969, the year the convent was closed. My siblings and I attended daily mass in the winter at the convent. I also attended Grade One with Sister Vincenta in the room down stairs across from the kitchen. I also have memories of bringing crocuses to the grotto and praying there. I enjoyed reading the other comments especially Stuart Harrison who was my brother Lorens' friend. I looked through this web site and found it very interesting. I lived in Leipzig for 8 years while I still lived at home with my parents. I went to school for 4 years at the little school and another 4 years at the convent. The nuns were very good teachers! I have a lot of tales that I remember from those great years. The convent was always a majestic looking building in a small town and I am pleased to see someone taking an interest in restoring it and making it useful again. Helen Glackin(Dorner)

Hey everyone! I recognize lots of names from the exchange of comments. My parents, Bill and Eileen Harrison, owned the Leipzig Hotel during the 60's and into the 70's. It's still home to me. They are retired to Wilkie, where there is a large Leipzig contingent. I live in Peterborough Ontario, where I Manage the Chamber of Commerce, and there is an amazing connection between here and "home". Some Peterborough residents owned some of the property around Leipzig as the railroad was pushing West. The Convent was also financed at the time by a very rich Peterborough resident, Geroge Cox, who owned the Grand Trunk Railway, and was one of the above mentioned land-owners. Creepy story about the ghost at the abandoned house... We used to drive by that house when we went to school every day on the bus. It was abandoned then, and still looks exactly the same. Amazing. Me and my firends went to visit the convent, were from saskatoon.... and we went and visited it it was a very interesting experience. my mom went to the school when she was a child. but anyways there turning it into a rehab/ bed and breakfast. but i was wondering the pics abandond 1 and abandond 1A we went there to take pictures and we went inside the old house and we herd my car door and we looked out the door and there was nothing .. so we kept taking pictures, when we went back to the car there was a perfect outline of a little girl/boy buttox and finger prints on the side of my car. we couldnt figure it out because my car was clean when we left the city and we never stoped all the way there and the only place the car could have been dirty was from the gravel road from wilkie and non of us had sat on the car. it was very creapy!

I have been in that building many times as a kid, my Mom went to school there. My Dad was born and raised in Leipzig. My Grandpa ran the Co-op store there forever.

I too saw the ad for the sale of the convent in the Arizona Republic and was intrigued.I know nothing about the hamlet so your site and the "roots" page were informative.Where did the inhabitants of the town go?It's like an eerie little ghost town now.

I saw the convent listed For Sale in The Arizona Republic and would LOVE to own this building. Also, to help renovate other buildings would be an historical blessing. My idea for the convent would be to make it a destination wedding location, yet . . . I don't have the funds for such a purchase. The ad noted there is a caretaker on the premises -- which is great!
