sojourners (II)

Mattaponi River

Sojourns represent extended (multiday) canoe & kayak jouneys on local rivers. Sojourns are a great way to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life and to reconnect with the river and reaffirm all that it has to offer. Sojourns also act to help create stronger bonds among its participants and provide a wonderful forum for learning about the environmental, economic and historical significance of our waterways.

The Mattaponi & Pamunkey River Association (MPRA) hosted several, very successful sojourns during the mid 90s. The 2006 MPRA sojourn represented an attempt to restart this once popular event. This was just a 2 day event, beginning at the Jensen's near Aylett and ending at Dick Campbell's, 5 miles below Walkerton. The group overnighted at historic Locust Grove and was treated that evening to several "tall tales" by its owner, Jerry Walker. For more information on MPRA and the activities they sponsor please go to www.mpra.org.
