There are more bikes than people in the Netherlands with 85% of the population owning at least one bike.
Bike riding is part of everyday life, wearing everyday clothes, no need to dress-up in a Lycra outfit or funny looking helmet and most of the bikes are very ordinary, solid upright workhorses that are ridden until they are old rattlers.
Alongside the roads and footpaths, the cyclists have their own bike paths with their own traffic lights etc. But in town centres cyclists and pedestrians mingle harmoniously. The locals having grown up amongst this mix seem to effortlessly weave in and out, rarely having a collision.
