I tried a number of these and gave up getting one in focus.... then I realised that I'd changed the focus point on the camera and forgot to change it back...doh!!

this is REALLY difficult to do. there needs to be a good deal of light, so you can get the shutter speed high enough. given the high levels of detail in a macro shot, even the smallest movements will result in blur, a high shutter speed is crucial to stopping the motion of a moving subject. also, at macro distances the dof is very narrow, so you need to get focusing perfect. a person's eye (and head for that matter) is tough to keep perfectly still for 0.5s.
