Heiau at Sunset.

A heiau is a pre-Christian place of worship. This is to insure a bountiful fishing grounds.

The rock altar is ancient. The piece on it is contemporary. There is a serious movement in Hawai`i to return to the ancient culture and practices. Many of which, including the language, were banned and illegal for 100 years. I think it's a wonderful thing...but now I'm editorializing and OT.

The structure has newish elements suggesting that some individuals respect and practice the old ways.

This is a good example of using a sunset as a blank canvas. Lots of times it's tempting to just get a photo of the sunset because it looks so nice, but it usually makes a more interesting photo if you can use the sunset or sunrise as a setting, or 'blank canvas' for another subject. Nice compositon too, with the palms and rocks showing, but not distracting.
