Eastern chipmunk (Tamias striatus)
As soon as the weather warms up enough, even snow is on the ground, chipmunks are roused from their winter semi-hibernation and out and about.

Song sparrow
The song sparrows are back in force around the Ottawa area, including at the garden. As are the red-winged blackbirds which were also calling continuously, but never close enough for a photo.

Another photo of the song sparrow in the previous shot.

American red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus)
It seems people have been scattering seed in several parts of the Backyard Garden and these squirrels, along with the greys, are so accustomed to associating seed with people, that they barely move when a person appears.

Eastern grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis)
Another well-fed squirrel snacking on some seeds on the back of the bench in the BYG.

American robin
There were several robins in the ravine, posing nicely on a low branch. These birds overwinter in the region in small numbers and are joined by returning birds in early spring. They can now be found in good numbers throughout the area.

Black-capped chickadee
Lots of chickadees at the garden, particularly around the Backyard Garden (BYG) where 5 or 6 could be seen at any given time.

Foxtail grass
Somehow this grass escaped being flattened by rain, freezing rain and snow over this wintner.

Willow catkins
The big willow by the pond is full of catkins and soon enough, given some warm days and pollen production, we should see lots of bees and other insects feeding on the pollen.

The Amphibian pond
Still mostly frozen, and snow-covered. Another week of warmer weather and sun should see a big change.

The Ravine

The Ravine
This view of the ravine is from the bridge over the pond, looking west. Although the pond is frozen, water is running under the ice, under the bridge and down the ravine.
