Insect art
(SG) Last week, I posted a photo labeled Rabbit art. This time it's insect art. I am fascinated by the beautiful patterns made by insects and other creatures. In this photo you can see the original line where the mother insect laid eggs under the bark of this now-fallen tree. As the eggs hatched, each larva headed out in a different direction, munching wood as it traveled. At the end of each trail, a larva pupated and/or emerged from the tree as an adult.

Andrenid bee
(SG) Andrenid bees were buzzing around close to the ground on a slope next to our Resource Centre on this sunny afternoon. I also found some on the north slope of the pond, where a willow tree is starting to bloom - good timing.

Garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis)
(SG) Accidentally interrupted these gartersnakes, probably trying to mate, on the south side of the Butterfly Meadow. Luckily, I didn't frighten them away and they continued following each other at a leisurely pace.

Eastern chipmunk (Tamias striatus )
As you can see, no sign of snow. Most of the snow has vanished although there is of course, some left in the region yet. The chipmunks have been out of their hibernation for some weeks, emerging when there was still some snow on the ground.

Groundhog (Marmota monax)
Another creature who has emerged from a long winter's sleep is the groundhog, here sticking his head out of the burrow and casting a look around.

Dark-eyed junco
The sound of juncos is very much everywhere at the moment as these birds come into and move through our area.

The pond in April
Mid-April and still the pond is half frozen, but a few warm days should see the snow and ice vanish.

More and more geese are flocking to the area, their calls filling the sky, reminding us that spring is really coming.
