Ah Dee had already had lunch, but he was a good sport to come out to meet his cousins and me for a mid-afternoon snack at this Taiwanese restaurant in NYC Chinatown. We have been to Taiwan and never been overly impressed with the cuisine, but we decided it was worth another try.
Here at Excellent Pork Chop House, we had pork chops over rice and a fried chicken leg over rice with some typical Taiwanese-style pickled vegetables and cabbage on top. There was also a large side dish of tiny fish and marinated hot peppers that were too spicy for us to finish. To our palate, these dishes were not as delectable as similar Malaysian-style ones, but they were certainly interesting. The Taiwanese wontons lacked body and fell apart in the mouth, much like the Fukienese wontons we had recently. However, the chicken soup, marinated dried bean curd, seaweed and udon-like noodles in soup were all very tasty.
I had to leave early, but the three of them proceeded on to Yuen Yuen Restaurant afterward (please see next picture).
