They were all off that day and walked the streets of Chinatown, stopping for a snack whenever they felt like it. They focused on finding cheap, street-style food from the Fujian province. So from 1pm to 10:30pm, they had fresh hand-pulled Fukienese noodles in beef broth, 2 varieties of pan-fried dumplings, beef pancakes (like a Chinese muffalatta!), Fukienese wonton noodle soup, fried taro cake, and steamed Fukienese meat buns.
That was just for starters. For dinner, they went for Cantonese food: A special fried rice with dried shrimp and yellow raisins, steamed vegetables, steamed oysters in XO sauce, salt-baked scallops and squid, creamy seafood rolls, and "Mongolian Golden Sand Chicken" with a special dipping sauce on the side.
For dessert, they had espresso, hot chocolate and Krispy Kreme doughnuts at a coffee bar in Chinatown. I feel so bad I missed my daughter's phone call to come join them on their eating expedition.
