Here I am in Theatre Square - Klaipeda -
You can see the Simon Dach Fountain topped with a statue of a Lithuanian girl Anike.
Simon Dach (1605 - 1659 ) was a Prussian German lyrical poet and writer of hymns ,
born in Memel in the Duchy of Prussia (now Klaipeda in Lithuania).
Dach's songs and hymns were sung throughout Germany.
The most famous of them is "Anke von Tharaw Oss, de my gefollt" (rendered from Low Saxon by Herder into modern German as "Ännchen von Tharau", "Anike" in Lithuanian),
composed in 1637 in honor of the marriage of a friend, which married a Lithuanian girl Anike.
In all, Anike from Tharau,
the subject of a famous German wedding and love song,
became a symbol of Klaipeda.
