The Place des Vosges square, in Le Marais district, is 140 m long and 140 m large.
The demolition of the 'hotel des Tournelles, on the north side of the place,
was done between 1565 and 1604.
Henri IV then decides the construction of the place Royale, finished in 1612.
In 1639, Richelieu raised there a riding statue of Louis XIII,
melted down by the Revolution and replaced, in 1818, by the actual statue.
Arched galleries stones and bricks in the north part, the rest plaster under ceilings
" à française except for the pavilion du Roi.
No garden before 1650.
But now the garden in the centre of the square
is so lovely and it's a refreshing oasis in hot summer days.
I could not help jumping into one of the fountains!
