The impressive ruins of Romena castle

Romena castle - Casentino - Tuscany (Italy)

The most serious damages suffered by the castle were not caused by various wars during the centuries, but by the caprices of nature:
the earthquake that struck the area in 1579 reduced the castle to a ruin.
It's thanks to the work of Count Ottaviano Goretti dé Flamini that this ruins came well preserved to us.
The Count put end to the dismantlement, by some inhabitants of the neighbourhood,
of the towers and the remaining walls. These opportunists saw in the castle a comfortable store of stones for building their residences and it's thanks to him that a great work of restoration and maintenance was started for preserving this important piece of Tuscan history.
Until the year 1889 farmers' houses were erected in positions attached to the second line walls and the grounds of the inner ward were cultivated.
More damage to the construction was inflicted during the second world war,
when it was subjected to allied bombardments against the German troops that were barricaded here .
