Fishing is the main occupation for local men in Jambiani and it isn't for commercial gain; it's for the village.
At daylight and even at night (depending on the tide) they go out to the sea with their local boats to catch a huge variety of fresh fish or hunt for octopus at the reef.
The fishing boats are hand made, from a single piece of wood and are called dhows.
The dhow – the lateen –rigged sailing vessel unique to the Indian Ocean – is one of the symbols characteristic of Zanzibar.
The daily routine of living in Jambiani is mainly determined by the sea.
