Designed by Maya Lin, who also designed the Peace Circle at Juniata College. The Memorial is arguably the most emotionally gripping memorial in Washington. Often described as a gash in the earth, it takes one by the throat and does not let go. This is a simple gallery of 8 pictures, each accompanied by two lines from a poem by A.E Housman, 1859-1936 who grew up close by Bromsgrove in the Midlands, where I played as a child.

The pictures are products of The Memorial's profoundly moving energy. I had felt a similar energy when I first read this Houseman poem. The two lines for each picture in sequence seem to fit. The memorial and poem each deeply affects me..

Well concieved and moving gallery John. At ANZAC Day services a stanza from Laurence Binyon's poem The Fallen, is recited.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

My compliments on this marvellous gallery. As a Canadian, I might not be expected to understand the significance of this memorial. But the reality is that I was a graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania during part of the Vietnam war and I observed (as an outsider) America during this profound period. I was often asked about life in Canada during this period and it was not just idle conversation to the young men who asked. I think the ambivalance of the times comes through strongly in your images and in the way you frame them. - Well done!
