Built between 1951 and 1957 in the Normandie Coastal city of Le Havre, France, the Église St Joseph was begun by Auguste Perret and completed after his death by Raymond Audigier. The lower part is formed by a square nave dominated by an octagonal tower that reaches a height of 110 metres. Shaped like a lantern tower, the church represents at once the elevation of prayer, a memorial to the second world war, life reborn for sailors and ships’ passengers, and Auguste Perret’s final creation, not to mention the structure’s greatest technical tour-de-force: 12,768 pieces of stained glass covering a surface area of 378 m² that provide extraordinary lighting in the heart of the church.
