A little help from the level and curves in Photoshop is a good way to reproduce what the minds eye percieves. In times of conventional film based photography the expensive filters on camera and the expert lab technicians were responsile for reproducing "good" results( or soft manipulating pictures to get the right colours and contrast..Today in digital it is knowledge of the digital lab and software that is needed to get the final product out. The camera is always half a tool. the second half is the lab..either professional or your own digital darkroom software !!
