In 1915 San Diego invited the world to attend its Panama California Exposition in Balboa Park, to commemorate the opening of the canal. SD Electric Railway built a new trolley line from downtown to the Expo, and ordered 77 new streetcars. Later, cars were shingled and sold to the public as cheap, pre-fab buildings.
