Ephesus, Turkey

Ephesus was an ancient Greek city of Asia Minor, and later a city in the Roman Empire. It is located near the mouth of the Menderes River, in West Turkey south of Izmir, and served as the leading seaport of the region. At the turn of the first century Ephesus had a population of 250,000 people, which made it the second largest city in the world.
