Derinkuyu Underground City, Turkey

This city was used by early Christians as a hiding place. Incredibly, it was large enough to shelter tens of thousands of people together with their livestock and food stores. Its complex layout extends down through 11 floors. The entire city can be closed from indoors with large stone wheels. There are some 600 outside doors to the city, hidden in the courtyards of surface dwellings.
