Salton Sea 2012

The Salton Sea is a fascinating desert basin about 120 miles east of San Diego that was originally a fresh-water lake. Today it is saltier than the ocean and, by some measures, polluted from local agricultural runoff. As a closed desert system with no outlets, about of fifth of its volume evaporates each year. Fish die-offs occur regularly, largely attributed to the oxygen-depleting combination of warm water and salt.

A diversity of birds love this area. Heavy migrations of waterfowl, marsh and shorebirds occur from late fall through spring.
