"I have found a patch of land
Golden in the sun
Crocuses are calling out
Spring has just begun"
These words by Christiana Quick-Cleveland in the song, 'Wecome to Spring', express one's feelings on seeing the crocuses come out to greet the spring. They often peek through snow covered ground in February and soon bloom in full glory.
How is it that crocuses can grow even in frost or snow? I learned that it is due to their natural insulation. They can weather the occasional frost and even a light dusting of snow because their leaves and petals are covered by a waxy cuticle, providing a natural insulation. Once again, evidence of wisdom in the design and beauty of our natural world.
