As Big As My Hand!

While visiting the area where I grew up on Big Fall Creek, I came across this track along the water's edge. It was as big as my hand! The track is not that of a big cat, such as cougar, and certainly not that of a dog! I checked with a local outdoorsman who agreed with my suspicion that it is a bear track. I found similar tracks identified as black bear online, such as this one - http://tinyurl.com/nvp3wcs The impression left depends on the type of soil it is left in. There are lots of black bear in the hills around here, so seeing tracks is not unusual.

The bear likely came down to the water in early morning for a drink. I was there in early morning too! When I saw the track I looked around to make sure I was alone. Fortunately, I was! Still, it felt a bit creepy. :) I remember seeing all kinds of wildlife tracks in the hills here when I was a kid. There were a lot more of them back then.

Well that's exciting,,, good you were on your own, bears are one thing we don't have to worry about down under...

Excellent capture of this sizable bear track, Vern. Be very vigilant next time in that area.

Seeing a print that size would've had me glancing around over my shoulder too. ;-)

Yikes, keep your eyes open on those early morning walks. That looks big and fresh!
globalgadabout02-Oct-2014 13:44
a powerful impression indeed...looks like it has big claws too...perhaps best to make noise as you walk in this area..
Jim Coffman02-Oct-2014 13:17
A sign that you share your wonderful land with others.
Ruth Voorhis02-Oct-2014 13:16
Interesting and well seen, but scary. Glad you didn't encounter the creature.

Here in the east, PA & NJ, Black Bears are becoming more common in populated areas. Back in the 1940s and 50s they were totally unknown and in recent years there are frequent sightings.

Keep one eye open for the bear while the other is taking photographs.
Steve Thuman02-Oct-2014 11:32
Sure looks like a fresh one! I'd probably be dumb enough to go look for it (to get photos)
Yvonne02-Oct-2014 10:42
..and you're not as fast as you were back then Vern! Glad you were on your own...
Helen Betts02-Oct-2014 08:12

That's a bit scary Vern, glad I only see kangaroo prints when walking in the bush!
You'd better carry a big stick!
John Ewing02-Oct-2014 07:52
That rather puts the chill on the morning! At least it shows you the direction not to head in.
