Crowding Around The Net

Pangkor Island, Malaysia

I saw Celia's image of the fishermen hauling in the net from the sea and it reminded me of my time at Pangkor Island where I also spotted a couple of fishermen doing the same. Typically, as `tourists' we went to see if they had managed to catch any fishes. With all the hard work, they only managed to catch a few fishes. At the same time a city boy stands watching the crowd surrounding the net, checking out the fishes that were in the net. It's not an everyday occasion for any of us to witness this act. After all it was a beach resort and never in our mind would think and expect fishermen hauling in fishing nets!
Attached are a few pictures I wished to share of a young city boy witnessing the act.

You have great ideas as to what will work and then you do it. And it's always great. V.

Very interesting images. I guess that, even at resorts, folks need to fish to support themselves and to eat. Nicely documented.

Yes, the perspective is excellent. There is magic in a child's wonder. Vote.

Magnificant Tricia, has a classic feel to it! The old lady in the ancient togs, the shadows in the foreground, the checking of the nets. Truly excellent! HUGE VOTE!

I love the 3 in this. First is the boy watching, then the people looking at him lastly the group looking/working the net. Well done and super perspective!

Nice series, dear. Although we don't see the boy's face, we can imagine the look of bewilderment and curiosity on his face as he watches on ~V~

Wow Tricia, this is definitely a different take on the same subject, but I love it too! As Phil says, this image is more about the effect of the presence of fishermen on the tourists, rather than the fishermen themselves. This image is about wonderment and curiosity - the fishermen are curious to find out what they've caught, just as the tourists are about them -- all human emotions and values. What I like about this image is the position of the boy at the scene - not only does he anchor the image, but he also adds a very interesting tension to the scene because he is the only one standing back. We never see his face so it leaves us wondering what he is making of this whole scene - he is obviously curious but he also appears apprehensive about getting too near. Is he afraid? In awe? Puzzled? Phil teaches that expressive photography often contains human values and has the ability to trigger questions and thoughts in the viewers, which, definitely makes this a great piece of expressive imagery Tricia!

You shoot the same general subject as Celia did in her image athttp://www.pbase.com/image/79829781, but for an entirely different purpose, and in an entirely different way. You anchor the image with the child, and by shooting the kid from behind, you abstract him and invite the viewer to see the scene through his eyes. He sees not the act of fishing itself, but rather its aftermath -- a beach strewn with fish and idle bathers gawkig at the fishermen studying their nets. You give us a social image -- a story about different societies sharing the same event through entirely different eyes. On the other hand, Celia gives a work of photographic art, which is far more abstract than yours and offers a universal vision of man at work in the sea. Two images, made in same place, yet telling entirely different stories in vastly different ways. It is not a matter of which is better -- there is no better here. Both images tell stories and both images convey larger ideas. They are entirely different in both form and content, yet they deal with a common subject. What a wonderful comparison you make here, Tricia.

I like the perspective, by towering over the little boy, you emphasise his youth and somehow I can feel his sense of wonder at the vision of the fish (and maybe the tourists). V
