I Want My Drink, It's Hot!

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

I was taking a walk at the park and spotted this little girl with the lady holding a child's umbrella. I was aiming for a shot of the girl holding the umbrella. However since I was walking forward and didn't want to appear that I was taking their picture (being candid and a paparazzi in action!), I had to grab whatever opportunity there was with the kid, the lady and the umbrella. The little girl didn't look happy, probably complaining about the hot sun and reaching out for her water bottle while the other lady was using the umbrella to shade her. Having just a 50mm prime lens with no zoom didn't help much in capturing a more detailed shot of the little girl's expression.

So much is being communicated here--the child's impatience for a drink and the mother's tender compliance (e.g. relaxed body language) in allowing her daughter to help herself and assert her need for independence. Now that's good parenting...so many moms might have been annoyed or vexed!

What is it with umbrellas in Asia! First time I was truly aware of the parousel syndrome was in Hong Kong. Sun comes out and a sea of little black umbrellas appear! I'm sure it makes perfectly good sense, but it does seem strange (to an ignorant Australian like me).

Great expressions - both of them. You were close - I find it hard with anything below 200mm... By the way, there does not have to be a reason for the little girl crying. It just happens. Great shot - BIG VOTE!
