Now you can see what the Sand Ladders look like. Going uphill, it is easier to step between the wooden "rungs" of the ladders: step up left foot, bring in right foot next to left foot, step up right foot, bring in left foot next to right foot, all the way up. As I was to learn when I had to retrace my steps after being turned back at Windy Pass, going downhill it was easier to slide in the gravel to the left or right of the Sand Ladders. Much faster and much less strenuous than trying to take the ladders downhill.
