Bird nest in my hanging planter

I've got a birdnest in my hanging planter... yes, I should have taken pics of the eggs, and didn't. Now we have nestlings, or whatever they're called. Mama/papa are small, brown, and fly to a nearby tree and scold me when I get too near (like when I'm watering my other hanging planters).
I've pretty decisively identified them as Carolina Wrens, but if I'm wrong, feel free to tell me.
I didn't even recognize it as a nest at first, I thought it was just a clump of leaves that somehow wound up in my planter. It's not open, like I'm accustomed to nests being (it has a side opening).

I've also pretty much given up on watering the flowers in that planter, as well.... I figure they're a small price to pay for fostering new bird life.

Also...

How do I encourage them to return next year (or stay through the winter, or whatever)?

At last! I've been trying and trying to find out what bird it is that made the tubular
nest in my hanging philodendron plant - small and brown, eggs were speckled. Babies were
born on April 17th and have feathers now. Of course, I haven't watered the plant since discovering the nest - so excited, I've never had baby birds before. Mama can't fit in the nest anymore but comes regularly to feed the babies. When I look at the babies, they open their mouths like they think I'm going to feed them - maybe they think I'm grandma? :)

Iam so grateful for the chick flick!!I to have a nest ,its inside my screen porch and in a plant ,a vine type that is 15ft long. don't care if I loose the plant .It was trowen away once by accident,and those finch like birds came back and built a bigger and better nest.I believe it's a blessing from God that they picked me!!!!I still wish someone would help me in what to expect next!

Need help identifying a bird nest. It is in a chicken nest box hanging on a building. Leaves are loosely piled in the box, but on the side is a snug opening about an inch in diameter and about 2 inches deep. Inside are two beige speckled eggs. I've never seen a side opening like this. There was plenty of room for the commom type bird nest. At first it looks like a squirrel's nest.

Glad it could help. They came back this year, but instead of nesting in a planter (or the nice house I hung for them), they chose to nest inside an abandoned/defunct gas grill. They're nicely protected from the elements and predators that way. :)

I am so glad you posted this--I just did an "ask jeeves" search listed as "what if a bird nests in my flowering hanging plant?" Your site came up--and I too have a pair of sweeet carolina wrens who built their nest in my brand new double impatients flowering basket. I was wondering if I could water the plant in places where the nest wasn't, but a biologist encouraged to not water the plant as it could hurt the eggs and have "nest failure". Mama bird is diligently incubating, so I can't wait to see the babies when they hatch! Your pictures are great. Thanks!
