Maybe somebody who actually knows somethinga bout geology will correct me on this, but unless I'm mistaken, these rock formations, although certainly granit (Maine is made of the stuff), were probably molten at one time, and lay cooling at a 90° from what they are now. I think they call them "basalt columns". It's curious, as most of Maine is granit that was polished off by glacial movements. Perhpase somebody out there can explain this to me?
