My experiment with building a "rain barrel" system from scratch instead of purchasing from the garden senter. The entire system cost less than one commercial barrel with stand.
I used inexpensive trash cans from the home improvement store, some plumbing fittings already on hand, old hose.
The stand is built of green treated lumber.
Using a larger (1") collection hose (or a second one) would help increase the collection rate.
Each container retains a little water below the plumbing fittings. This helps collect sediment and maintain a little weight to prevent movement in the wind.
The can lids prevent mosquito problems, but allow overflow when capacity is reached.
If sediment accumulation in the first container becomes excessive, I may add a separate drain valve on the bottom to help flush it out between annual cleanings.
