There are two kinds of African rhinos, the white and the black. The difference is in the shape of the mouth. It is extremely rare to see a black rhino which can be quite violent. While the black rhinos are near extinct, white rhinos have slowly bounced back. Kruger National Park and surrounding area has the largest white rhino population.
We had multiple sightings of the white rhinos on this trip. These creatures can weigh up to 2.5 tons. They have incredible senses of smell and hearing, but their vision is extremely poor. They need constant supply of water so water holes are the best places to find them. The rhinos love to soak up mud on their armor-thick skin to reduce chances of irritation from flies.
While poaching for rhinos are growing rampant elsewhere in Africa, the guards and ranchers in this part of the world are doing their best to safeguard their existence.
