At times they were as near as 30 feet. I used a 300 mm lens and at times had to back it off so as not to overfill the screen. Would have liked a 500mm though. But the bears totally ignore you, in their minds you have no connection to food, they've never been fed or hunted by humans here, and their minds are fixed on finding salmon. You need to watch the usual stuff with them, don't go near cubs, don't smell of fish, don't have food with you. The guides had pepper spray as a safety precaution but its a joke, a full size grizzly would take out humans in a matter of minutes - males can get up to 1200lbs.
