If you do not see pure black, pure white and pure shades of gray in the above image, then your monitor may be able to be adjusted.

This target consists of a central 18% gray patch that is surrounded by 25 patches arranged in 1/6th stop values that are successively brighter and darker. The target could be generated in Phootoshop or equal by imputing greys patches of apropriate value.
