Recycled Christmas Trees

Westbank Bridge Park

Do you know what happens to your Christmas tree? This is a staging area where we can bring our trees if we want to get rid of them before January 10th. The trees are then used as part of a way to help reclaim our wetlands. The trees are placed in special fences(cribs) and they help to collect the sediment in the water. This helps stop erosion and can form new marshes. The project has been in place in St. Charles Parish since the 1980s. After January 10th, any tree that is put out on the curb without lights, tinsel, ornaments or flocking are collected and delivered for use in the Wetlands Reclamation Project. To learn more about it or see a Christmas tree crib you can visit this site http://www.deq.state.la.us/assistance/recycling/home/xmastree.htm

ours help build the compost mountain, this sounds a much better idea. I like the contrasting greens and browns.

what a great project. We bring our trees to the boy/girl scouts, they have a bonfire tonight

Amazing how many different shades of green there are in here. Looks like good habitat for all kinds of things.

I like those different hues of green and browns in this picture. Very informative as well, great idea how they make use of those X-mas trees.

Wonderful idea...now if they could only figure out what to do with
those artifical ones that everyone throws away!

Hey, that's a great idea. I didn't know it was bad luck after the 12th day. Gotta take mine down, pronto.

Good shot and nice PR for saving our wetlands.

I hope it's making a difference. We're losing so much of our wetlands.

That's where my tree went too! Nice shot

We usually take our tree down on 12th night, but the garbage service doesn't pick it up the trees until about a week later.

Comments aren't really working again... took me about 5 minutes to be able to comment here. Anyway... really good scheme, but isn't it supposed to be unlucky to keep your tree beyond the 12th day?

Whatever works is good Elaine. Gosh it's nice to be able to see & comment right now. Hope it lasts.
