There was lots of wildlife viewing on a recent trip to Northern Vancouver Island and a bonus boat trip out into the straits, thanks to our son's local connections. I saw a large number of eagles, but the highlight of the boat trip was seeing the groups of Stellar sea lions in their natural habitat.

According to the Pacific Biological Station in Nanaimo, there are three rookeries of Steller sea lions in northern British Columbia and a number of large colonies off northern Vancouver Island. Much larger than California sea lions, Northern (Steller's) sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus) can reach a weight of 1000 kg (2200 pounds).
