Northern Shovelers in Flight

Southern Vancouver Island

This is a duck that we've seldom see in flight, so it was quite a suprise to see these four getting ready to come in for a landing on the pond! Northern Shoveler facts: Perhaps the most visible diagnostic characteristic of the northern shoveler is its large spoon-shaped bill, which widens towards the tip and creates a shape unique among North American waterfowl. ~ Ducks Unlimited
