The weatherman calls it "variable weather, cloudy, with periods of rain, wind
gusts, and some sun", the catchall phrase for January weather on Vancouver
Island. Luckily, the "some sun" part was happening as we passed by Nanaimo
Harbour and I was able to get this shot of Protection (on the right) and
Newcastle (on the left) Islands just before the storm hit. Both these islands
sit a few hundred yards off Nanaimo's waterfront and are only accessible by
shuttle ferry (a 5-10 minute ride) or pleasure boat. They are so close to each
other that visitors and residents can walk between them at low tide!
Newcastle Island is an historic BC Provincial Maritime Park and Protection
Island, the smaller of the two, is made up of a community of private home
owners who enjoy the unique lifestyle it offers. The view to the east of
these islands looks across Georgia Strait to the Coastal Mountains and
Howe Sound.
