A Welcome Sight

Southern Vancouver Island

The salmon are running in the rivers and the eagles are beginning to gather in the esturaries and along the river banks. Every year we look forward the return of the eagles and it was a welcome sight to find this eagle resting in a newly cleared area near the Nanimo River. Bald Eagle facts: To hunt fish, easily the eagles most important live prey, they swoop down over the water and snatch the fish out of the water with their talons. They eat by holding the fish in one claw and tearing the flesh with the other. Eagles have structures on their toes called spiricules that allow them to grasp fish.
