The Cowichan River Estuary is one of favourite places to visit and in the autumn the colours and reflections make it an exceptional subject to photograph. Estuary facts: The gradual change in the water from a freshwater to marine ecosystem is typical of river estuaries. They form important staging points during the migration of many fish species, such as salmon that live in the sea but migrate to the rivers to spawn. The estuary gives them time to adjust to the changes in salinity during spawning and as smolt that are returning to the ocean.
