Female Belted Kingfisher

Ridgefield NWR, Ridgefield, Wa

It took two trips around the auto route at the Ridgefield NWR before I was able to get this bird in my lens. We saw it the first time around, but trying to catch it while it flitted from tree to tree was near impossible. Second time around she just sat there and almost smiled at me...one never knows when the moment will present itself; you just have to be ready. Belted Kingfisher facts: The Belted Kingfisher likes to nest in banks near the water. It uses its strong feet and bill to dig burrows which will serve as their nest. The burrow is usually 3’ to 6’ deep, either horizontal or sloping upward slightly.
