The float home community at Maple Bay is representative of many that can be found along Vancouver Island's coastline. Often the homes in these communities have been renovated from the original float homes that were used in logging or fishing camps. Float home history: Float homes were originally built for fishermen, millworkers and loggers; individuals who worked in remote areas with limited access. They often formed a community and the homes were connected by a grid of floating boardwalks. An excellent article on the history of float homes in BC "Home Life in a Logging Community in British Columbia: The Float House and the Float Town" can be found at: Float Home History
