Kurt Hurlock - born 1946. One of 6 children. Mum and Dad were Pamela and Tom. Brother Paul, sisters Aileen, Linda, Zena and Phillipa. I Lived at Ford cottage from 1946 til 47. My grandparents moved to the camp in 1947. Ford Cottage used to have 2 stairways, big inglenook fireplace with room for 4 people to sit - 2 each side, a well and outside barn for laundry in a large copper vessel with a wood fire underneath. Grandfather worked for Poland on the farm. Tom, my father, used to drink with Canadians at the Fox and Pelican in Grayshott and two of his sisters married Canadians from the camp. The officers told my dad they were leaving and asked him if they wanted to move into the camp themselves which they did as he had come back from the war and had nowhere to live which is why he was at Ford Cottage. Many others in similar circumstances did the same until it was full and the Petersfield council a the time, charged the people rent. So very surprised at some of the other comments as my dad grew up in Grayshott and Headley. Also... Hello cousin Anna. Kurt

I have just rend the comments about Ford Cottage, my grandmother/grandfather and children used to live in Ford Cottage, all the children went to Grayshott school. and I remember it as being a derelict building when I was a child. I am trying to find anyone with a photograph. My parents are no longer with us but one of my Aunts lives in Canada I will try and get some information from her. My grandfather used to work for Polands. Anna

Hi there P Henderson, It is good to hear from somebody else with a conection to Ford Cottage. I used to walk up to the A3 to catch a bus to Petersfield to go to school. on the way home I'd stop at Poland's Farm and collect a couple of pints of milk which was part odf Dad's wages when he worked for Poland's pig Farm. Poland owned Ford Cottage. It was dereliict when we moved in and I went down with my Dad and cleaned it up and fixed the leaded glass windows to make it habitable.

I have only just seen your comment dated June. Do you know anyone who I could contact about the area as it was then. My parents lived at Ford Cottage around 1940 with my grandmother. They were only 14 & 16 at the time. Mum had such wonderful memories of her time there, how she had to go and collect the water from well, etc. Sadly she has passed away but my dad is still alive and I would love to find out more about the area. I am hoping to visit there some time.

Patricia, I used to live in Ford Cottage 1950-51. There was no plumbing or electricity. Water was from a well and it was my job at 11 years old to carry it into the house. There was an outhouse and a barn. Dad made us a swing on a huge tree in the yard. The Youth Hostel was across the stream by the wishing well. When I was there it was not part of The Youth Hostels Association. The lakes were alive with trout, fresh water mussels, caddis flies and all kings of pond life. I went back to visit in 1981 and the cottage was gone and the lakes were polluted and almost devoid of life.

Does anyone know anything about Ford Cottage and the youth hostel that was in Waggoners Wells in 1939-41.
