Wenatchee N.F. - Tyee Lookout

This was a driveup to an old fire lookout in late June 2005. Unfortunately the clouds and rain were moving in so there was not too much to see and photograph on this day. But what little I did see is shown below:

I went back to Tyee for the last week of July, 2011. Not as much lightning as 2010, and only one fire on the district. Looks like I will be back for the last week of July again this year.

Hi, Ken. I followed you on the lookout in 2010. My first time back since my tour of duty in 1956. I was lucky to stay there for 3 weeks this time. Hope to stay longer in 2011. Once a fire lookout on Tyee you never forget.

I spent the summer of 65 (late June through mid September) on Tyee. The following summer was on Sugarloaf, but I enjoyed Tyee more. I had few visitors on Tyee--only 16 all summer, not counting a few FS employees working on fires or trails who stopped to visit. I also fed the big ground squirrels. I spent the second week of August, 09, on the lookout as a volunteer. Many changes due to the fires of 94; no more ground squirrels. I'll be back up there as a volunteer the last week of July, 10.

I was the lookout on Tyee in 1956. Went up on June 28, 1956 and left Sept. 28, 1956. Worked For the Entiat Dist. from May to the end of Nov. Lots of memories. This was before any fires, so all was beautiful. Ponderosa Pine 4 feet or more in dia. was the norm. Everything has changed, even the Forest Service. It was better the old way. Even though I married a local girl from the area, I have not been back to the lookout for more than 40 years. I thought it had been torn down, but thanks for pictures like yours I see that it is still there. I met a friend while there and he stayed with me most of the summer. A ground squirrel I named Mumps. He woke me up every morning by scratching on the window next my head. After WE(!) had breakfast, he would ride around on my shoulder for the next hour or so. Then one day he didn't show up any more. I worried about him. After a few days I realized that all the squirrels and chipmunks had left. It was hibernation time. It was also nearing the end of Sept. and my summer on Tyee was coming to an end. When I left on Sept. 28th all the leaves on the huckleberry bushes had turned golden. A fitting departure. I will be 71 this fall but am still an avid hiker and plan to make at least one trip back to Tyee Lookout. 1956 was a real high point in my life. I would do it again any time.
