Mt. Rainier N.P. - Paradise Glacier

This was a late July 2004 hike out of Paradise during flower season. Lupine, Paintbrush in Orange, Red, Pink and Magenta as well as some beargrass and others were in bloom. The day was sunny but hazy for the most part and the lacked of a polarizer really got me. I took the trail till it petered out amid snow where the Paradise Glacier starts or rather used to start. It's receding and the Ice Caves are gone as far as I can tell. Anyway, I still got to see some nice scenery:

Hi Adele, You can download a PDF of the Paradise area at:http://www.nps.gov/mora/general/maps/paradise_trails.pdf The route I took starts from the Paradise Inn parking lot and goes through the hodge podge of trails around Paradise along the Eastern most of the trails heading North towards Myrtle Falls. That could be considered the Golden Gate Trail or the Skyline Trail or it may be unnamed, I'm not sure. After Myrtle Falls you go right at the next junction along the Skyline Trail. I stayed on that past the junction with the Lakes Trail and then I went right on the Paradise Glacier Trail which eventually peters out in a snowfield. There was still a decent amount of snow in the trough carved by the Paradise Glacier but as you can see in late July when I visited there was enough flakes that I would imagine that it doesn't melt out until September and in some years not at all. You could continue on up through the snow to the toe of the glacier if you wished. There used to be ice caves up in the glacier which were a big attraction but to the best of my knowledge they are no longer there as the Paradise Glacier has receded in recent decades. I also peeked down to the East into the Stevens Creek drainage as well as wandering down the spur Fourth Crossing Trail just to check it out. Making a loop of it and continuing up the Skyline Trail to Panorama Point is an excellent option that I have done at other times although not on this particular trip. Regardless, July is probably the prime season given the flowers blooming and snow conditions. Have fun if you go. -Eric

It just turned out that there were three orange paintbrush as I was put the gallery together; there is no particular reason why.
