MAD About Dance is an energetic and multi-ethnic modern dance company known for its varied repertoire, ranging from colorful theatrical pieces to the abstract, uniting classical and contemporary dance in exciting ways. It is dedicated to presenting accessible works focusing on experiences that connect us all. The repertoire is a rich cross-section of works including collaborations with composers, writers and other artists.
Michiyo Tanaka, Artistic Director/Choreographer was born in Kamakura, Japan and raised both in Japan and the United States. This duality in cultural heritage is a strong and positive influence to her choreographic language. This bridging of modern Western concepts and traditional Japanese ideals formed the base for the innovative and powerful choreography that exists in MAD About Dance. Beginning her dance career in California, she came to New York to perform with the Asakawalker Dance Company. Since then she has danced with several metropolitan companies, and choreographed works for Lincoln Center, Symphony Space, and numerous festivals and academic events. In 1983, she founded Michiyo and Dancers, which eventually morphed intoMAD About Dance.
Ms. Tanaka, received her M.F.A. from Lehman College (CUNY), where she taught dance and costume design. She also directed, choreographed and costumed numerous productions for the Dance and Theatre Department. The Lehman Art Gallery and Arts and Humanities Department produced Numa, a performance piece conceived for a specific site, the lobby of architect Marcel Breuer’s 1969 building, which now serves as Lehman College’s Art Gallery. Ms. Tanaka is currently a faculty member in the Art Department at Bronx Community College where she teaches art history, drawing and ceramics and also teaches dance and ceramics at College of Mount Saint Vincent. She received Presidential Development Grant from Bronx Community College to choreograph “Out of the Box,” a multi-media work in 2002.With her fine art and theatre background, Ms. Tanaka views the stage and dancers as a three-dimensional painting, continuing to explore the universal language of “art”
In 2005, she was awarded a NYSCA Individual Artist Grant (choreography) by the Queens Council on the Arts, in 2006 she was awarded an Individual Artist Grant (choreography) and Organizational Grant for MAD About Dance from New York City Department of Cultural Affairs/Greater New York Arts Development Fund by the Queens Council on the Arts and this year Organizational Grant for MAD About Dance from New York City Department of Cultural Affairs by the Queens Council on the Arts. Most recently, she is one of the recipients of this year’s Individual Artist Initiative (IAI) award.
MAD About Dancehas performed extensively in the New York area including Nikolais/Louis Choreospace, Merce Cunningham Studio, Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center Summer Festival, “Celebrate Brooklyn,” Riverside Dance Festival, the Japan Society, and opened for the American jazz performer, Mel Torme to name a few. MAD AboutDance has toured Japan a dozen times since 1983, performing in various cities appearing on television as well as teaching master classes.
Critics have described MAD About Dance as “sassy” and “dramatic” with “a creative edge.”
